The 3000 starts over on the backstretch of a 400-meter track. You run a few strides, turn back, and find your place on the curve of the start line. The opening rush puts you on someone's heels. Soon you are listening to breathing and watching for a gap. When the pace lifts, you have to decide whether to follow before the runner ahead gets away.
